Scene 4: The Watchtower

The magical disturbance creates three immediate problems:

  1. Several townspeople are trapped inside a building that has shifted halfway into another structure.
  2. A young girl has wandered toward the harbor, claiming that her dead mother is calling to her from the water.
  3. The newly revealed stairway is beginning to close.

Kael can only reach one location first without assistance.

The Shifting Building

The building is a small boardinghouse called The Gray Finch. Its rooms have overlapped with rooms from another version of the town. Doors open into unfamiliar bedrooms, and furniture is fused into walls.

Inside, Kael finds three trapped residents and a frightened old man named Tovin Marr.

Tovin recognizes Kael immediately.

“You came back,” he says. “You promised you would stop the machine.”

Tovin claims Kael visited Greyhaven years ago and helped activate the Mnemonic Storm Engine. He insists Kael later betrayed the town.

When Kael asks about the woman who built it, Tovin’s expression changes.

“Your mother knew the engine was never just a machine. It was a family oath. Every generation gave it a memory, and every generation paid for the privilege.”

Whether Tovin is telling the truth is unclear.

Kael can rescue the residents by:

• Finding the correct doorway using Arcana • Persuading the building’s confused occupants to follow him • Using magic to clear a path • Creating a convincing false memory that the building is already stable

If Kael lies to the building, the structure briefly obeys him.

As the building settles, one wall reveals a faded inscription:

THE STORMWORKS REMEMBER THE HAND THAT FIRST WOKE THEM.

The Harbor

At the harbor, the young girl stands at the edge of the seawall. Her name is Nessa Vale.

The water below her is unnaturally calm. A woman’s voice rises from the waves.

“Nessa, come home.”

The voice sounds loving, but the water beneath it is filled with pale hands.

Kael can save Nessa by:

• Persuading her that the voice is not her mother • Using magic to frighten away the figures in the water • Grabbing her before she jumps • Speaking a memory of his own to anchor her to the present

If Kael listens closely, the voice changes.

It begins speaking in his own voice.

“You already know what happens if you let the town remember.”

For one heartbeat, the voice becomes that of an older woman:

“Kael, do not let them give you the engine’s memory.”

The Underground Stairway

The stairway leads into darkness beneath Greyhaven. Blue light pulses along the walls like a heartbeat.

At the bottom, Kael finds a circular chamber containing a broken stone pedestal. Resting on it is a small metal device shaped like a storm cloud.

The device reacts to Kael’s presence.

A voice speaks from it:

“Authorized bloodline recognized.”
“Mnemonic interface restored.”
“Primary operator: Kael Veyris.”
“Maternal lineage confirmed.”

The device projects a brief image of the Mnemonic Storm Engine. One of its copper rings is cracked, and a figure in a silver mask is feeding black crystals into the machine.

Behind the figure stands a younger woman with silver-streaked hair. She is holding an infant wrapped in a dark blue blanket.

Before Kael can see the child’s face, the image fractures.

A second projection appears: several masked figures gathered around the engine, their gray masks marked by a single blue line.

One of them says:

“The Revisionists will remove the disaster, even if the heir must be removed with it.”

Before Kael can learn more, the chamber begins collapsing. He must escape with the device or leave it behind.

If he takes it, the device occasionally whispers contradictory instructions throughout the adventure. It also grows warmer whenever Kael is near evidence of his mother or the Revisionists
