Memory’s
The First Memory
Kael sees the original creators of the engine. They used storm magic and shared memories to protect Greyhaven from a catastrophic coastal storm.
One of the creators bears the same silver streaks in their hair as Kael.
The woman is Mara Veyris, Kael’s mother. She places her hand against the engine and says:
“The bloodline is not a key. It is a promise. The engine will obey my descendants, but it will also inherit what they refuse to remember.”
The memory ends as masked figures enter the chamber.
Their leader says:
“The Revision begins tonight.”
The Lost Memory
Kael sees Greyhaven destroyed by a massive storm. The engine saved the town, but absorbed the memories of everyone who died.
The machine became unstable because it could no longer distinguish between the living and the dead.
In the final moments, Mara Veyris stands before the engine and tears a glowing crystal from its core. She presses it into the hands of a younger Kael.
“When they come for your memory, choose the storm that still belongs to you.”
The memory fractures before showing what happened to her.
The Hidden Memory
Kael sees himself standing in the engine room.
He is older, exhausted, and covered in blood.
Mara stands across from him, older but alive, one hand pressed against the engine’s central ring. Behind her, Revisionist masks hang from the walls like trophies.
She tells him:
“They will make you believe I abandoned you. They will make you believe the engine chose you by accident. It did not.”
Kael’s older self answers:
“If I remember you, they can use me to find the engine.”
Mara places a hand against his face.
“Then forget me. But leave yourself a way back.”
He tells someone:
“If I forget this, Greyhaven survives.”
The memory ends before revealing what he did.
As Kael examines the console, the Mnemonic Storm Engine activates beneath the town.
A pulse of blue lightning travels through the Stormworks and strikes Kael directly.
A fourth crystal appears in the console, black and veined with silver.
Its label changes between three words:
THE CHOICE
THE COST
THE HEIR
The crystal contains a memory that does not belong to the past. It is a memory of Kael making a decision in the future.
The console offers him one final choice: take the crystal, destroy it, or leave it connected to the engine.
If Kael takes it, the crystal bonds to his storm magic. From this point onward, whenever he casts a spell of 1st level or higher, he briefly experiences a memory from a possible future. These flashes may reveal useful information, but they also blur his certainty about what has actually happened.
If Kael destroys it, the engine loses its ability to track him, but the Revisionists immediately know he has rejected the bloodline’s inheritance and begin hunting him as an enemy.
If he leaves it connected, the engine stabilizes temporarily, but one person in Greyhaven forgets Kael entirely. That person may be Bram, Lio, Rusk, or another important ally, depending on the story.
For a moment, Kael hears thousands of voices.
Some call him a hero.
Some call him a murderer.
Some call him the creator of the engine.
Then one voice rises above the others:
“Come below, Kael Veyris. Remember what your mother buried.”
The Stormworks begins to collapse.
Kael must escape before the complex is destroyed. During the escape, he may recover one important item:
• A damaged map leading to the underground ruins • A silver mask fragment • A storm crystal • A journal written by his future self
If Kael chose the black memory crystal, the item he recovers is marked by the same silver veins. It occasionally whispers in Mara’s voice:
“You have chosen the memory. Now survive its consequence.”
